Imagine, for a moment, that you have broken a limb – perhaps a leg, or an arm. But instead of properly setting it and putting you on your way to healing, your doctor simply bandages it up and sends you on your way.
Before long, you’re back – your leg still broken, the problem every bit as serious as before. Your doctor treats you in the same way, and before long you’re back again. An endless cycle without a lasting cure.
For Dr Victoria Mason, a researcher in the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies and the School of Politics and International Relations, the fragile peace between Palestine and Israel is that broken limb; ever damaged, never healing and an issue that has ramifications far beyond the fractious borders of Israel and the Palestinian Territories.
